The 1932 Aston Martin Riley LM Type Special - with the exciting 2 1/2 litre Riley Big Four engine from 1937 onwards.
This is the well known converted Aston Martin International to LM type bodywork
There cannot be many Aston Martin specials around - this one converted many years ago when these cars were not worth considering the actual value of the car before converting it with a far more powerful 2 1/2 litre Big 4 Riley engine for a fraction of the price of a real LM - say 10% of today's price...
This very well known Special is featured in the 1994 John Bateman book entitled “The Enthusiast’s Guide to VINTAGE SPECIALS” - please see the editorial to the left here
In the present ownership since February 2021, and only used for exciting road use - work undertaken since then to date also includes the attached the invoices from Blue Diamond Garage. This car hasn’t travelled more than 20 mile since their invoice.

HISTORY OF THE RILEY BIG-4 ENGINE
The 16/4 or Big-4 engine was launched in 1937, as a replacement for the 15/6, although both survived until the end of production. Designed around the same basic principles as the successful 12/4, it was 1ooocc larger at 2 1/2 litres! The engine initially provided more power than Rileys were used to, but even though this engine produced a true 100mph saloon for Riley before World War II, the engine did not achieve full potential for another 20 years.
