1970 Jaguar E-type 4.2 Series 2 Fixed Head Coupe 4-speed automatic

Registered on 1st October 1970 by Henlys of Salisbury according to the Heritage Certificate, this UK right hand drive E-type is one of just 4855 Series 2 4.2-litre Fixed Head Coupes produced, this car being completed on 2nd March 1970 and despatched on 12th March 1970. In Cream with black leather upholstery this car is described as an original car that has been maintained in all-round good condition with work attended to as and when required. At some point the manual gearbox was changed - at a cost understood to be £7000 - to 4-speed automatic transmission from a later Jaguar 4-speed with J gate as fitted to the various  XJ6 and XJS cars, making for a more relaxed drive in this sports coupe. It should be noted that eared wheel spinners are fitted to this car, contrary to the then standard earless type from March 1969 onwards.

This car was purchased by the current owner in May 2017, joining a considerable collection of classic and vintage cars, and used for road rallies, and now subject to a slimming down of the collection.

The Series 2 E-type    Introduced from October 1968 until September 1970, the Series 2 E-type had a number of design changes to suit the requirements of new legislation in the ever eager American market. Headlight covers disappeared, larger front and rear brake and indicator lights were introduced – no bad thing for the roads of today - and a new wrap-around rear bumper was fitted. Dashboard rocker switches replaced the toggle switches, and the bonnet mouth was enlarged slightly to aide cooling. The exhaust pipes at the rear were now splayed to clear the number plate. Earless wheel spinners to the wire wheels were now fitted from March 1969. Pressed steel wheels available.  The steering column was now made to be collapsible, so it could absorb the impact in the event of an accident. Head restraints were now fitted. A key steering lock arrangement replaced the dashboard key and push-start button. Ribbed cam boxes introduced to replace the polished versions. Just 4855 fixed head coupe Series 2 E-types were produced, of which ONLY 22% or 1070 WERE RIGHT HAND DRIVE with 78% and 3785 cars in left hand drive, together with 8628 open top sports, and 5326 2+2 examples, totalling 18,809 cars. 0-62mph was reached in 7.3 seconds in manual form, from 265bhp @ 5400rpm with 283 lbs feet of torque at 4000rpm, with a claimed top speed of 142mph.
