993 TIMELINE

The last air-cooled 911 - the 993 programme - started as far back as 1988, with Tony Hatter from the UK styling the car in 1989. The launch was planned for 1993, hence the ‘993’ designation. The first plan was that the 993 should be a totally new design; it turned out to be a re-styled 964 due to Porsche management cost constraints.

The major change the factory wanted to make was to eliminate the age-old complaint from 911 buyers about the tail happy characteristics going right back to 1965. The return of the ‘Weissach effect” introduced on the 928 Porsche duly tamed the 993 into behaving properly on cornering, making fewer 911 visits to the hedge backwards!

Porsche also wanted to address the noise created on the 964 because the rear suspension was bolted directly onto the body. The roof of the new 993 and the front boot area are the same as the 964 and indeed all the way back to the 1974 model year. The headlights on the 993 were also slanted backwards in the front wings, a major departure from the 964 model, with the outside trim fittings made thinner to make the 993 look different, with the interior remaining the same.

A new 6-speed gearbox replaced the 5-speed unit, with major revisions to the engine, along with the new hydraulic valve adjustment replacing the mechanical adjusted system, making the engine much less costly to owners when the 993 was serviced.

A smaller 72 litre fuel tank replaced the 77 litre 964 tank.

Production of the 993 began on the 11th August 1993. Differing from the 964 which was seen only as a Porsche enthusiast car, the 993 appealed to the entire Porsche customer base – and went on to be a best seller – long overdue as the company had been losing money due to many factors, not least the world wide recession at the time, with 964 sales falling like a stone. During this time the number of vendors and suppliers also fell from over 900 to 350, which meant that the 993 was very soon to return a profit.
